You know you need a home security surveillance system to help keep your family safe. But do you know what separates a good one from a bad one?
The best ones come with these 5 features:
1. Lots of sensors
The last thing you want is for an intruder to get into your home. As long as you have sensors on all of your windows and doors, the odds of someone getting in (at least, without making a whole lot of noise) are slim.
If someone does manage to get in, though, you need even more sensors – ones that can prevent a bad guy from moving around a whole lot. In order to be truly effective, your home security system needs motion sensors that cover all of your big places – like your long hallway or your living room.
2. A perfectly-placed keypad
Every good home security system comes with a keypad, but the positioning of it makes all the difference. If your keypad is right out in the open (where a bad guy can see it through the window), it makes it easier to break in. That’s because an intruder can plan how he’s going to get to the keypad and try to disarm it.
Instead, make sure your keypad is installed in a hard-to-find place, so that an intruder can’t plan his attack on it in advance.
3. The right fine print
Every home security system will come with its fair share of fine print. It’s up to you to make sure that all of it makes sense!
Start by checking out the warranty. If you’re required to do something to keep it in place – like performing regular tests, for example – you need to know now, before you do something to inadvertently break the terms.
Then, check out the rest of the fine print. You may discover that moving your security system to a new home comes with lots of extra fees, or that cancelling your contract early comes with heavy penalties.
4. The right balance between affordability and flexibility
In most cases, your home security will have cheaper monthly costs if you sign a longer contract (usually, if you sign for three years or more). However, signing for that long takes away your ability to leave the company if you don’t like it, or to re-negotiate terms that you’re not thrilled with.
If you want the most flexibility, you’re better off signing a one or two-year contract.
5. No wires
Bottom line – when your home security system uses wires, intruders have something to cut and, thus, disarm. That’s why you need a system that doesn’t afford a bad guy that opportunity!
